Short version: we do not store your IP address, and you can read the whole site without an account.

Reading without an account

Browsing and reading need no account and set no cookie. The site keeps your chosen text size and light/dark preference in your own browser's local storage; that never leaves your device and we cannot read it.

What a read records

We pay writers per view, so we do have to count views — carefully enough that nobody can manufacture them. When a chapter is read, we record: which chapter, roughly how long the page was open, whether the page was scrolled, and a salted one-way hash of your IP address and browser user-agent string.

The IP address itself is never written down. The hash cannot be reversed, is useless outside this site, and becomes meaningless when the salt is rotated. It exists so that the same reader is not counted twice for the same chapter in a day, and so a single machine cannot generate ten thousand views. It is not used to profile anyone and is not shared.

We also record the host a visit came from (for example google.com) — never the full referring URL, which can contain a search query.

With an account

An account stores your email address, a scrypt hash of your password, your display name, your saved stories and your place in each of them. Sessions are opaque random tokens stored hashed; signing out really does end the session, and changing your password ends every other one.

Advertising

The site is funded by ads. Ad slots sit between chapters and around the catalogue, never inside the prose. Where a third-party ad network is used it will set its own cookies subject to its own policy, and that will be named here before it goes live.

Deleting your account

Ask and it is deleted, along with your library and your reading progress. Read events keep only the hash described above, which is not linked to you once the account is gone.
